WHAT IS A GRAPPLETHON : You probably thinking to yourself is this a tournament coming into your town ? NOPE !! Grapplethon is NOT A TOURNAMENT however it is a gathering of another kind. The Grapplethon charity event is an open mat fundraising training session where grapplers from various BJJ teams join together to train for a predetermined period of time, supporting individuals going through life struggles such as death in the family, terminal illness, serious injury, and other burden hardships.

Location:  Team Beauregard Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

                     Mesa, Az 85210

Time: 1:00 pm- until everyone leaves

What is the Cause: Grapplethon Arizona beneficiary will be Bryaden Hughes who is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer known as Ewing's Sarcoma. Here is his story.
Brayden Hughes is a 13 year old boy that's already overcome several health challenges in his young life. He was a premature baby that led to months living in neonatal intensive care centers, eventually having his first surgery at 11 months old. By 3 years old he was diagnosed with Autism attending numerous amounts of speech and occupational therapies to better prepare him for kindergarten. This once nonverbal boy, began speaking and with the help of an aide at school, progressed nicely throughout his elementary school career. By middle school kids began to bully Brayden to the extent that he had to be homeschooled. Just when things began to calm down for him; the unbelievable news of cancer was given.
Brayden was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma of the spine. A rare cancer that began in his spinal cord, and spread, fracturing several vertebrae. He has been receiving chemotherapy since July of 2015, and completed 6 weeks of radiation and is still going strong. This once bullied child, has taken his battle with cancer and catapulted it into a new lease on life. Upon going to various hospitals, he learned a lot about pediatric cancer families and in doing so, realized that even in his darkest days, there's a child somewhere fighting much harder than he ever had to. He began a charity where he takes donations and purchases much needed supplies for kids with cancer; such as diapers, formula, gift cards, clothing, and so on. He has touched many families through his philanthropic work, and in the process, managed to boost his own self worth a great deal. While Brayden is still undergoing chemotherapy today, he spends his days giving back to his community. His strength through adversity speaks volumes to his maturity; and he hopes to one day be cancer free himself.

Grapplethon: Standing With Ian

EGreeting everyone and welcome to the second installment of Quick Stop Grapplethon. It has been a
while since we have had a Quick Stop Grapplethon and we are really looking forward to putting on another great event. Since 2013 the Grapplethon events here in Southern California seemed to be getting bigger and bigger which makes this upcoming charity event one that me and everyone is looking forward too. Time: 1:30 pm- until everyone leaves

What is a Grapplethon: A GrappleThon is a Brazilian Jiu jitsu event for charity, where the BJJ community gets together to roll for a predetermined period, fundraising for a worthy cause. In the case of the way I do them we pick an individual who seriously needs the help ex: someone stuck in a serious life crisis such as death in the family, cancer, or other life stricken issues. Grapplethon is NOT A TOURNAMENT however it is a gathering of another kind where different grappling practitioners drop there academy flags and come together for a just cause training and learning from one another. Grapplethon is an open mat 180 minute rolling session, which usually goes longer than that. The rolls will be 6 minutes each (timer style) so at the end of the day you will get 30 rolls of great training while also hopefully meeting new friends in the process while supporting a great cause.

Format: Our last Grapplethon which featured gi and no-gi was a great success and fun experience for everyone. To keep with the flow of things this version of Grapplethon will be Gi & No-Gi training.

RULE: if you choose to do no-gi please no neck cranks, heel hook, twisters, or any crazy submissions that may injure your training partner. Remember we are here to Train Safe and Have Fun !!!  (I will explain more on this rule in future wall post)

Also if you choose to do no-gi PLEASE bring rash guard or shirt. No rolling bare chest for hygiene and possible ringworm hazards.

What is a Quick-Stop Grapplethon: Our past Grapplethons have been organized in an event format filled with challenges, prizes, training and charity. A quick stop Grapplethon event is focused on the core of the purpose which centers of Charity and unity with the community.

Quick Stop Grapplethon 2 Format: At this Quick-Grapplethon event since we will be holding the event at an MMA academy in an effort to not only introduce the fight community to what grapplethon is all about and offer a new experience to the participants this version of Grapplethon will be Primarily No-Gi w/ Gi training as an option.

What is the Cause: This Quick Stop Grapplethon Star is 1 year Old Victoria Crihfield who has been diagnosed with brain cancer. . Listen to her story.

Victoria Ann Crihfield was born on June 17th, 2014. She suprised everyone by showing up 8 weeks early. Born at LB memorial hospital, Tori spent the first couple months of her life in the NICU. Mom and Dad practically lived at the hospital as they waited for Tori to gain enough weight so they could take her home. Tori finally made it home and life was perfect for about 6 weeks. Then on October 3rd, mom took Tori in for a routine check up, during this check up the doctor noticed fluid build up on the top of Toris head. She was rushed in for immediate surgery to relieve the pressure. After the MRI cam back, we found an obstruction, which was blocking her natural draining pathway for her brain fluid. Last friday, we had a 6 hour brain surgery and we were lucky enough to get 100% of the tumor out. So close to being in the clear, the labs came back and our world came tumbling down. She was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. ATRT is a brain cancer that only has 30 cases per year and happens in only 3/1,000,000. It is a very agreesive cancer and our only hope to beat it is a very intensive chemo therapy & radiation regiment. These treatments on a 3 month old baby could have long lasting effects developmentally, The scope of the deficits are impossible to predict. However, my wife and I know that we must do everything we can, utilize the tools available, and stay positive and strong through out the process. We start chemo mid October, 2014 and the road ahead is a long one, that is why we will need all the love, and support we can get. We appreciate you all so much and i know with your help we will beat this, and we will have Victory For Victoria.

Price: The cost to attend will be $ 10 nothing less. However if you choose to donate more that is totally fine.

Raffle Prizes: Raffles Gifts  will not be a major focus but there will be prizes given away for this event. Raffle prizes will be raffled after every 12 minutes (2 rolls) so everyone will get to get there prize during the event!!!

In-Door entry Gift: First 25 people to show up to the event will receive an exclusive Grapplethon patch !!

Patch Purchase: Help Someone Out !!

This will be more of an informal blog than your typical deep thoughtful ones you have heard in the past. Due to some miscommunication with the patch manufacture which in the end worked out for the better we have had a "Patch Problem" ever since Grapplethon: Team Dana Moore. With over 360  patches received from the distributor I literally have enough patches for at least a good six more Grapplethon events which probably equals to three years.

At the conclusion of Grapplethon: Team Dana Moore I made an attempt to encourage people to donate to someone on a website and they would receive a free patch. Unfortunately nothing happened. Not to long ago through a individual visiting my academy she asked me about the patch and acquired in purchasing one which motivated me to restart the campaign so here goes.

I still have a bunch of Grapplethon Patches (about 60 grand total) left over if you want to purchase one. Although it would be a cool way for me to make some money for myself at the end of the day I am small time and I think someone needs the money more than me. So here is the deal.

Listed below are a couple of stories that may touch including our recent Grapplethon Star Liam Stark.

The way to purchase a patch is simple all you have to do is donate $5 or more to any of the individuals listed below and I will send you a Grapplethon patch. Verification must be made by simply proving you made the purchase by receipt or seeing you name on the contributor list.

Any question please feel free to ask me.

Thanks and remember lets be 1 % better by helping some else be 1% better in there time of need !!!

Take a Stand and Get Your Patch !!!

Grapplethon Star Profile: Liam "Iron Man" Stark

Hi my name is Liam Stark. I have been fighting for my life since Day 1. Doctors didn’t give me a chance to survive due to heart conditions while I was in utero But I did. Unfortunately my twin did not have a chance. My twin is now an angel looking over me and my family. My mommy & daddy were devastated about the news that I wouldn’t survive too. They stayed positive and held onto hope. Me and my mommy fought through everything. The pregnancy was tough on all of us especially on mommy. During the pregnancy we had a number of serious complications in the form of high amniotic fluids (that needed an amniocenteses to remove fluid).

Early contractions, syncope, and a number of cardiac issues.  We were in the hospitals a lot due to all of this. Then on May 20, 2013 I was born. We had some complications resulting in mommy’s heart stopping nearly three times during my delivery. Then I had some breathing issues because of all the fluid.

Then just a few days old I would choke, Turn blue, even stop breathing. So my parents spent large amounts of time in the hospital with me. About 2 Months old doctors finally found out what was wrong with me. I had a Laryngeal Cleft ( rare congenital abnormality in the posterior laryngo- tracheal wall). There is a gap between the oesophagus and trachea, which allows food or fluid to pass into the airway. I am always sick with pneumonia because of fluid being in my lungs. Many times I was rushed into the hospital because I couldn’t breath, then I would have to stay in the hospital for observation or PICU. I had surgery to “try” to repair the cleft, but I am still the same way.

Then I also was diagnosed with GERD (reflux disease) I have to be on 3 medications 2x a day for this. I have a heart condition that they are still trying to figure out. So we are constantly at the cardiologist office or doing some sort of testing. I have syncope episodes just like mommy.  I also have a rare auto immune disease called Primary Hypogammaglobulinemia. Which is low levels of gamma globulin (antibodies) in the blood and I am in high increased risk of infections.( bacterial infections, Viral infections, colds, flu ect.) Also I have low levels of B-cells (lymphocytes)-Special white blood cells. BUT because I have low level of B-cells and no antibodies my body attacks itself especially my organs. Also my body doesn't response to titers ( immunizations). This disease makes me in a higher risk for blood cancers and an infection could also take my life if I cant fight it off. There is no cure for this all my doctors can do is give me blood transfusion treatments every 4 weeks (IVIG therapy). My whole 1st year of life has been spent in the PICU center, Observation rooms at the hospital, overnight stays, ambulance rides, Always at the pediatric doctors office.

Always in Boston hospitals which is about a 3 hour ride one way.  I have been under anesthesia numerous of times for surgical producers or for medical testing.  I am thankful I have my parents always by my side to support me even though its been hard with some scary moments and financial hardships because missed days of work, insurance not paying for my medication or treatments. But despite all of this I am one of the happiest and amazing little boys you’ll ever meet. I am a little fighter, And losing is NOT an option!

Optimus BJJ will be hosting a charity Grapplethon event to support Liam Stark for more information visit
